History@STUST

STUST was founded in 1969 as a private junior college (Nan-Tai Junior College of Engineering). After three decades of providing excellent vocational education to students and through rigorous reviews from the Ministry of Education (MOE), Nan-Tai was upgraded in 1996 to a “college of technology”. Because of our outstanding performances and high qualifications, Nan-Tai College of Technology was the first technical and vocational college to be approved in 1999 by the MOE to restructure as a university. As the University began a new era, its official English name was changed to Southern Taiwan University of Science & Technology (STUST) (In Chinese, the original name, Nan-Tai, means “Southern Taiwan”).

STUST has only one campus, which is located in the historic southern Taiwanese city of Tainan. Currently, the academic organization of STUST is comprised of four colleges, including College of Engineering, College of Business (COB), College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and College of Digital Design. Among them, there are 25 departments and graduate institutes providing degrees of bachelor, master, and doctor. STUST also runs 15 research centers to provide cutting-edge technology, innovation and services.
The number of full-time faculty and students in the fall semester, 2011 is 589 and 19,972 respectively. In terms of student size, STUST ranks the 7th largest university among the approximately 170 universities in Taiwan. (Source: the Website of MOE)
